In this class you will be constructing a figurative sculpture like the Gryphon and the Mock Turtle from Alice and Wonderland, taking parts from different animals, and making one creature. Using a combination of handbuilding techniques, pinch, coil, slab, and modeling, you will combine figures or objects and learn how to work form and surface to create your own narrative. Facial features, hands, feet, a sprig of decoration will be added to animate the figures. Surfaces can be enhanced by texturing, and detailing and the use of stains, underglazes and glazes. Discussions will focus on the figure, proportion, posture, and gesture in the construction of these forms. Bring your ideas and tell a story as you create and give life to your sculptures of animals, figures, forms and more. We will be looking at both historical and contemporary ceramic sculptures for inspiration and ideas. Some experience is helpful but not necessary, we will do initial exploratory sketches. A $10 supply fee is due to the instructor at the first class meeting. Please bring a snack or lunch.
