Registration Fee: $165.00

In this course you will be constructing a figurative sculpture like the Gryphon or Mock Turtle from Alice and Wonderland, taking parts from different animals, and making one creature. Using a combination of hand building techniques, pinch, coil, slab, and modeling, you will combine figures or objects and learn how to work form and surface to create your own narrative. Facial features, hands, feet, and sprigs of decoration can be added to animate the figures. Surfaces can be enhanced by texturing, detailing and the use of stains, underglazes and glazes. Discussions will focus on the figure, proportion, posture, and gesture in the construction of these forms. Bring your ideas and tell a story as you create and give life to your sculptures of animals, figures, and forms. We will be looking at both historical and contemporary ceramic sculptures for inspiration and ideas. Some experience is helpful but not necessary, we will do initial exploratory sketches. Pieces will be bisque fired for glaze painting in the 2nd session. Bring a lunch.
